  2. There are several differences between British English and American English. One example: in British English, the /r/ sound is pronounced only before a vowel. In all other cases the /r/ is silent, sounding more similar to the sound "ah". In American English, the /r/ sound always pronounced wherever it appears in a word.
The spread of English around the world is often discussed in terms of three distinct groups of users, where English is used respectively as:

•a native language(ENL);the primary language of the majority population of a country, such as in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia.
•a second language(ESL);an additional language for intranational as well as international communication in communities that are multilingual, such as in India,Nigeria, and Singapore.
A foreign language(EFL);used almost exclusively for international communication, such as in Japan and Germany.

  5. The text talks about what is standard English, and if there really is a difference between British and American English. There are some slides with the differences between the words of American and British English, as well as tips on phonetics.

These tips phonetics are unknown by many students of the English language: for example, the "r" is not pronounced in British English.

Finally, the text also presents a brief history of the English language. How it was formed and how it is today.

  8. Well, studying about the standard English and English Standards, from all over the world, is very important for us, as English students to be aware of the large number of English dialects and accents that exist all around the world and also for us to know that the British and American ones are the two most important forms of the language, not scientifically, of course, but politically, legally instead, you know. That's it.
